Dynamic range of atomically thin vibrating nanomechanical resonators

چکیده
Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) crystals offer attractive properties for making resonant nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) operating at high frequencies. While the fundamental limits of linear operation in such systems are important, currently there is very little quantitative knowledge of the linear dynamic range (DR) and onset of nonlinearity in these devices, which are different than in conventional 1D NEMS such as nanotubes and nanowires. Here, we present theoretical analysis and quantitative models that can be directly used to predict the DR of vibrating 2D circular drumhead NEMS resonators. We show that DR has a strong dependence / 10 logðE Y q 1=2 3D rte Þ on device parameters, in which strain e plays a particularly important role in these 2D systems, dominating over dimensions (radius r, thickness t). This study formulizes the effects from device physical parameters upon DR and sheds light on device design rules toward achieving high DR in 2D NEMS vibrating at radio and microwave frequencies.VC 2014 AIP Publishing LLC. High frequency MoS2 nanomechanical resonators.
Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a layered semiconducting material in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), as thin as a monolayer (consisting of a hexagonal plane of Mo atoms covalently bonded and sandwiched between two planes of S atoms, in a trigonal prismatic structure), has demonstrated unique properties and strong promises for emerging two-dimensional (2D) nanodevices. Here we report on t...
متن کاملAir damping of atomically thin MoS2 nanomechanical resonators
We report on experimental measurement of air damping effects in high frequency nanomembrane resonators made of atomically thin molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) drumhead structures. Circular MoS2 nanomembranes with thickness of monolayer, few-layer, and multi-layer up to 70 nm ( 100 layers) exhibit intriguing pressure dependence of resonance characteristics. In completely covered drumheads, where the...

We report on the experimental demonstration of a new type of nanoelectromechanical resonator based on black phosphorus crystals. Facilitated by a highly efficient dry transfer technique, crystalline black phosphorus flakes are harnessed to enable drumhead resonators vibrating at high and very high frequencies (HF and VHF bands, up to ∼100 MHz). We investigate the resonant vibrational responses ...

متن کاملNews: Putting a damper on nanoresonators.
The harmonic oscillator holds a special place in the history of science and technology, having an important role in the development of both classical and quantum physics. Examples include Galileo’s pendulum, resonant electrical circuits and molecular vibrations. In micro and nanomechanical systems, the prototypical harmonic oscillator is a mechanical resonator — a beam of material that oscillat...
